Bertha Pappenheim (1859-1936) was anAustrian feminist and social pioneer who in 1904 founded the Jewish Women’sAssociation in the country, and served as its first president for 20 years. Shededicated extensive efforts to reconciling the Jewish faith with feministideals.

She became aware ofthe prevalence of unequal treatment when her brother attended high school whileshe was forced to stay at home and help their mother with housework. When thefamily moved to Frankfurt, she became involved in a number of charitablecauses, and in 1895 became the director of a Jewish girls’ orphanage, where sheshifted the educational standard to include vocational training. Throughout theyears she founded a number of community homes and educational institutions forJewish people.
